Geschichte der Sammlung

Friedrich Nicolas Manskopf (1869-1928) hatte schon als Schüler in Frankfurt und während seiner Auslandsaufenthalte 1887-93 in Lyon, London und Paris begonnen, Erinnerungsstücke von Musikern und Schauspielern zu sammeln: Autogramme und Briefe, gedruckte Porträts, Karikaturen und Fotos, Theaterzettel, Konzertprogramme, Plakate und Erinnerungsstücke aus dem Besitz von Komponisten. Als Manskopf nach Frankfurt zurückkehrte, richtete er ein privates Museum ein. Er veranstaltete Ausstellungen zu einzelnen Musikern bzw. Themen und lieferte Leihgaben für fremde Musik- und

Theaterausstellungen. Nach seinem Tod schenkten seine Erben die Sammlung der Stadt Frankfurt. Seit 1947 ist sie Bestandteil der Musik- und Theaterabteilung der Universitätsbibliothek Johann Christian Senckenberg.

History of the collection

Friedrich Nicolas Manskopf (1869-1928) began to collect memorabilia of musicians and actors as early as his school days and later, during his visits abroad (1887-1893 Lyon, London, and Paris), collecting autographs, letters, printed portraits, caricatures and photographs, theatre playbills, concert programmes, posters and curios like Beethoven's watering can, or an umbrella which once belonged to Franz Liszt. When Manskopf returned to Frankfurt in 1893 he turned his house into a private museum. He organized exhibitions and lent exhibits to other exhibitions on music and theatre. Nicolas Manskopf died in 1928, whereupon his heirs presented this magnificent collection to the City of Frankfurt. Since 1947 it is an inherent part of the Music and Theatre Department at the Universitätsbibliothek Johann Christian Senckenberg.
